Family
and consumer sciences education provides information that every individual
needs daily to make sound decisions that contribute to a healthy, productive,
and more fulfilling life. The Family and Consumer Sciences Education program equips
students to teach family life and consumer skills, such as resource management,
nutrition and wellness, human development and family relations, clothing and
textiles, and housing and interior furnishings.
The undergraduate degree program offered in Family and Consumer
Sciences Education meets the teacher certification requirements mandated by the
Louisiana Department of Education.
The emphasis of Family and Consumer
Sciences Education is to prepare individuals for family, work, and careers by
providing opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors
for balancing these roles successfully.
The unique focus is to strengthen individuals as family members, wage
earners, and community leaders. Family
and Consumer Sciences instruction strengthens basic academic skills and
develops critical thinking skills through practical applications in real-life
situations.

Graduates become certified to teach grades 7-12 in the family and consumer
sciences classroom. Students complete
the program with a secondary teaching area.
Family and Consumer Sciences teachers also have

With a broad knowledge base in family and child
studies, family management, foods and nutrition, apparel and textiles, and

Admission
Requirements
General admission
requirements to the University apply to entering freshmen and transfer
students.
Upper Division Requirements
Upper
Division requirements for students with the Family and Consumer Sciences
Education are established by the University Teacher Education Council. Students applying for upper division must
have earned 46 semester hours by the end of the quarter the application is
made. They must have an earned grade point average of 2.5 and a minimum
cumulative GPA of 2.2. Students must
have completed University Seminar 100, Speech 110 or 377, Education Curriculum
and Instruction 125, English 101 and 102 and 201 or 202 (9 hours), Social
Studies (9 hours), and Mathematics (6 hours). A grade of "C" or
better is required in English 101 and102, Speech 110 or 377, Education
Curriculum and Instruction 125. At the
point of application, students must have a minimum C average in science, math,
and social studies. Applicants must have passed the
Other Program Requirements
Students in the Family and Consumer Sciences
Education baccalaureate program are required to earn a C or better on all human ecology and professional education
courses. Students are required to apply
for clinical experience. A grade point
average of 2.5 is required for enrollment in clinical experience. Students are required to successfully
complete the Praxis PLT and the Praxis specialty exam prior to placement for
clinical experience.
