General Dental School Admission Guidelines

GPA A 3.6 GPA is about average for most schools, while a 3.2 is on the lower end.
DAT The national average DAT score is between 17 and 18, but schools such as LSU average an 18.8 for entering students’ scores.
Stats Many schools in the area have an average class size of about 60 students. About 15 – 20% is out-of-state and about 80 – 85% is in-state. Most Louisiana students go to LSU (as it is the only dental school in Louisiana) but a few are also accepted to Baylor, other Texas schools, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and only a few other schools. Other southern schools such as Alabama accept very few out of state students; Georgia, for example, will not even process out of state applications!
Arkansas No dental schools exist in Arkansas; students with Arkansas residency must apply to out
Residents of state schools. A few schools (University of Tennessee and LSU) for example reserve a few select spots for Arkansas students.

Timing

DAT The DAT can be taken every 80 days. It is a computerized test so it can be scheduled for anytime. Applications can be picked up from Dr. Sellers, and they take approximately 1 month to process. After processing you call the testing center to make an appointment. The testing process should begin about winter of Junior year but no later than spring. The last possible time to take the DAT in time for applications is fall of senior year.

Applying Applications should be in as least by October of senior year, as interviews will begin in November or December. LSU does not have any information on-line. A quick e-mail is the best way to receive application information. They usually respond the next day.

Applying to Professional School from Louisiana Tech University

Admissions Exams- MCAT, DAT, GRE.
Most students will be ready to sit for the exam at the end of their junior year/ beginning of their senior year.
MCAT is offered twice per year, once in April and once in August. The April test is the one that should be taken if the student is planning on applying for admissions the following year.
DAT-see the dental school page on this site.
GRE is computerized and can be scheduled at anytime. Earlier is better, within reason of course.
Pre-Med/ Pre-Dent committee- Spring before you apply to professional school
Before applying to professional school, the student sits before a group of TECH professors from Biology, Chemistry, and Biomedical Engineering.
They review the students college career and offer suggestions on the application process
This committee also is responsible for submitting letters of recommendation on your behalf to the professional schools of your choice.
Apply to the schools- summer through winter of your senior year.
Apply to the schools of your choice.
Most schools have different deadlines for applications, be sure you know what they are.
Secure your letters of recommendation early, they can hold up your application.
Once your application is submitted, sit back and wait for that invitation to interview.
