Master of Science in Biology

The School of Biological Sciences offers the Master of Science in Biology degree,
with an option for either the thesis plan or the non-thesis plan. The thesis plan
requires 30 semester credit hours, including the completion of a thesis research
project; the non-thesis plan requires 36 semester credit hours.

Admission to the M.S. in Biology program
Applicants seeking admission to the graduate program in Biology must meet the
minimum admission requirements of the School of Biological Sciences. Admission
decisions are based on the applicant’s GPA, as well as scores on the general test
of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination). A student may be admitted to the graduate
program with either Unconditional Admission or with Conditional Admission.

Unconditional Admission:
Unconditional admission requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.0 scale),
as well as a summary score of 1400 using the following equation:

               (GPA X 200) + GRE verbal score + GRE quantitative score = 1400

(Note – the scoring scale for the GRE has recently been modified and scores reported
using the new scale are expected to be received late fall 2011. At that time the above
equation will be modified to accommodate the new GRE scoring scale.)

Conditional Admission:
Unconditional admission requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.50 (on a 4.0 scale),
as well as a summary score of 1200 using the following equation:

               (GPA X 200) + GRE verbal score + GRE quantitative score = 1200

(Note – the scoring scale for the GRE has recently been modified and scores reported using
the new scale are expected to be received late fall 2011.  At that time the above equation
will be modified to accommodate the new GRE scoring scale.)

International Applicants
International applicants must, in addition to the above criteria, meet all Louisiana Tech
University Graduate School requirements.  International student requirements described on
