Betsy Palay, a professional medical illustrator and co-creator of SPARK, an online course in visual communication, will speak as part of the New Frontiers in Biomedical Research Seminar Series on Monday, March 25. Palay will share her experience and expertise as a medical illustrator with students, faculty, and staff during her visit, and engage the campus community in the use of visuals for the effective communication of complex ideas and information.

Betsy PalayAfter earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Palay graduated from a specialized interdisciplinary program at the University of Michigan with a Master of Science in Medical and Biological Illustration. She is a Fellow and Past President of the Association of Medical Illustrators and a Board Certified Medical Illustrator.  

Palay has lectured at Stanford University, the University of California San Francisco Medical Campus, and the University of Michigan Medical School. Her work has appeared in numerous publications and has been exhibited internationally. She has collaborated with a number of science-based companies and organizations — including Amgen, Genentech, Johnson & Johnson, and NASA — to create innovative visuals that support researchers, educators, entrepreneurs, and healthcare providers, and has been a recipient of over 120 industry awards for her work in visual communication and design. 

Palay will speak in a seminar at 3:30 p.m. in University Hall 134 titled “Picture as Portal: Using Visual Language to Advance Science and Technology.”  All are welcome to attend the seminar and reception that follows.
