Louisiana Tech University offers a pre-veterinary medicine concentration under the Bachelor of Animal Science degree curriculum. Students considering veterinary medicine as a career must have a sound foundation in the biological and physical sciences, as well as a general knowledge of the arts and humanities. In addition, students must be motivated by an interest in animals and human health and have the ability and desire for an in-depth scientific study of medical sciences.
Most students apply for admission to a professional program after three or four years of course work at Louisiana Tech University. Numerous graduates from our program have continued to pursue their Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at schools around the country. Our students who excel are generally the most highly competitive students in the state for admission to veterinary schools.
An on-staff veterinarian not only instructs animal science courses but also provides guidance for students as to curriculum and application preparation. Our program is set-apart from other programs by the extensive hands-on training with both small and large animals including use of our equine, beef, sheep, and swine laboratories. In addition, we have working relationships with many of our area veterinary hospitals to allow students observational opportunities and hands-on experiences with both large and small animals.
