Agricultural Business

Agricultural Business offers two concentrations, Business or Plant Science. Louisiana Tech is the only regional institution that offers a degree in Agricultural Business with a concentration in Plant Science. The program’s broad range of courses includes horticultural production, landscape design and contracting, agronomic applications, pest management, soil and water management. Learning settings include our greenhouses, horticultural gardens, tree farm, garden and nursery areas.

Agriculture Business Curriculum

Agricultural Education

One of only three Agricultural Education programs in the state, Louisiana Tech University has the only agricultural science teacher certification program in north Louisiana. The program is a collaboration between the College of Applied and Natural Sciences and the College of Education. Hands-on learning experiences are taught by experts in both the fields of agriculture and education.

Diverse course choices include plant science, animal science, agricultural economics, agricultural mechanics, and natural resource management.

Animal Science – Equine Science Concentration

Scientific theory is blended with practical applications in modern laboratories (beef cattle, swine, sheep, goats, equine, poultry, and meats). Enhance your educational experience with a combination of classroom and laboratory learning experiences with several species of university-owned animals. Learn horse care and management, equine anatomy, physiology, behavior, and nutrition in Louisiana Tech’s 43-acre Equine Center on the South Campus. The Equine Center houses approximately 35 stock-type horses of various ages. The facility includes a 16-stall training barn, a lighted arena with covered stands, and multi-sized round pens for groundwork training.

Animal Science – Livestock Production Concentration

Students in the Livestock Production program receive practical experience with the University livestock herds. Tech-owned beef cattle, swine, goats, sheep, and horses are used in lab sessions, and many classes and labs are held in various barns on Tech Farm. Field trips to experience livestock operations, our meat science lab to illustrate meat processing, preservation, storage, and utilization, and organizations such as Block and Bridle add depth and diversity.

Extensive hands-on training with both small and large animals, an on-staff veterinarian who instructs and guides all animal science courses and students, and relationships with area vets who allow students observational opportunities are what sets this in-depth scientific study of vet medical sciences program apart from others. Our students are generally the most highly competitive students in Louisiana for admission to veterinary schools.

Forestry – Wildlife Habitat Management Concentration

This academic program and specific focus on wildlife habitats is designed for students who want to learn about conservation and management techniques that support sustainable wildlife populations and their habitats. Louisiana Tech offers hands-on opportunities in habitat management for biological diversity, species conservation, and the ethics of consumptive wildlife use.

Tech is a Society of American Foresters-accredited school that offers coursework necessary for students who want to qualify for certification through The Wildlife Society. Studies emphasize the life histories, habitat relationships, and habitat management of wildlife species and communities.

Geographic Information Science

Louisiana Tech’s academic program in Geographic Information Science (GIS) is a robust, hands-on interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration between the School of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry and the Department of Social Sciences.

Students have the opportunity to discover the intersection between technology and geospatial data and this connection’s real-world applications. You’ll learn how to analyze those interactions and use the data to assist with public and private sector management, administration, and planning.
