Richard Kordal, Ph.D., RTTP, Director, Office of Intellectual Property and Commercialization, Louisiana Tech University, earned a doctoral degree in Chemistry (biochemistry emphasis) from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has 18 years experience in the in vitro diagnostics industry with Dade/Baxter, Boehringer Mannheim, Instrumentation Laboratory and Bionostics in various technical, supervisory and managerial positions including industrial technology assessment. He helped co-found an Indianapolis-based medical device firm, Uridynamics, and was able to help raise its first and second rounds of private seed capital. During his employment in industry he has taken more than 10 products through R&D into the market. He has authored or edited numerous scientific articles for professional and technical journals, organized and presided over several symposia, and given numerous presentations at major scientific and professional meetings. He assumed the position of Director, OIPC, Louisiana Tech University in June 1, 2005. Prior to coming to Louisiana Tech University he was Director, Intellectual Property Office and University Patent Officer, University of Cincinnati from 2001 to 2005 and Director, Biomedical Technology Transfer for Indiana University from 1997 to 2001. He is an active member of Association of University Technology Transfer Managers (AUTM) organization and served as member of AUTM’s Board of Directors in his capacity as Vice President of Metric and Surveys. He has published articles in technology transfer journals and has presented lectures and seminars on technology transfer before many organizations and groups. As part of LA Tech’s MS Engineering and Technology Management curriculum he teaches a course on Technology Transfer and Commercialization (ENTR 501). He is a nationally, recognized expert on technology marketing having contributed a book chapter on the subject in Research Administration and Management. He also co-founded an internet-based brokerage service, Techquisition.com, to make the marketing and acquisition of technology easier for both buyers (licensees) and sellers (licensors) of technology He is the former co-founder and co-chair of the Cincinnati Chapter of the LES. He also co-founded and co-chaired a statewide organization of Ohio’s academic technology transfer directors (Technology Transfer Officers’ Council) in part to raise the profile of the office to state government officials and to gain their support for our regional economic development initiatives and also helped to create similar organization in Louisiana, Louisiana Innovation Coalition. He is also the university’s Chair, Export Control Committee and Empowered Official and Co-Chair of its Institutional Review Board.
