Admission
Louisiana Tech maintains as its highest priority the education and development of its students in a challenging, yet supportive community of learners. Louisiana Tech grants the Associate of Science in Nursing in a vibrant university culture of excellence. Upon completion of the nursing program and approval by the State Board of Nursing, graduates are eligible to take the licensing exam and enter into professional nursing practice as a registered nurse. Tech graduates are highly recruited, maintain an outstanding NCLEX pass rate, and are ready to continue to grow professionally as lifelong learners.
Requirements for admission
The Division of Nursing welcomes applications from individuals who are interested in beginning a career as a registered nurse (RN). Following admission to the University, students may begin taking general education requirements for the Nursing curriculum. Applicants for the clinical Nursing program are selected twice each year (Fall and Spring quarters) based on the following admission criteria:
- GPA (minimum cumulative of 2.6)
- Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) with minimum 68% overall
- Three Letters of Recommendation
- Must have completed a minimum of 7 credits of the required biosciences before starting the clinical seat.
- Must earn a C or better in all required course work to complete the nursing program.
All application materials must be received by the Division of Nursing no later than March 1 (Fall cohort) or November 1 (Spring cohort). Applicants are selected by the Admissions Committee on a competitive basis. Students must have completed seven (7) credit hours of the biological sciences required for the nursing curriculum in order to accept a clinical seat in the program. Additional points are awarded to the application for successful completion of each required biological science course in the nursing curriculum prior to selection of the clinical cohort.
Please submit the following information to GTM 139 as a single application packet by 5pm of the deadline:
- Application.
- Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) for Nursing Students (minimum of 68% overall, limited to 2 exam per year, 30 days apart) by PSI testing center.
- Three letters of reference.
- Most current unofficial transcripts if you are not a current Tech student.
Once a student receives an acceptance letter, they must complete the approval process requirements of the Louisiana State Board of Nursing. Instructions will be provided with the acceptance packet.

Students must receive approval to enroll in a clinical course by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
There has been a change in our application requirements. The ACT will no longer be accepted for nursing applications.
Beginning with the November 1, 2025 deadline, those applicants will be required to submit scores from the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). The TEAS is a standardized exam designed to assess readiness for nursing and allied health programs. It is a timed exam made up of 170 questions and covers reading, mathematics, science, and English language usage. The test is administered by PSI Testing Centers and includes a variety of question formats such as multiple choice, multiple select, fill in the blank, ordered response, and hot spot questions.
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must achieve a minimum overall score of 68 percent. Students may take the exam no more than twice per calendar year, with at least 30 days between attempts.

Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Test for Nursing Students
The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is a standardized exam that assesses a student’s readiness for nursing and allied health programs. It’s a multiple-choice test that covers reading, math, science, and English language and usage. The ATI TEAS exam is comprised of 170 total questions, with 209 minutes in allocated testing time. Question types include multiple choice, multiple select (select all that apply), fill in the blank, ordered response and hot spots.

- Step 1: Check the PSI testing locations to make sure there is an exam date and time available that fits your schedule. All TEAS exam purchases are final, so be sure there is an exam location, date and time available to you prior to your exam purchase.
- Step 2: Visit www.atitesting.com/register
- Step 3: Scroll to the registration section of the page, and click “REGISTER NOW”
- Step 4: Click “In-Person” Registration
- Step 5: Choose your program type – either “TEAS for NursingStudents”
- Step 6: Select a state.Then select “search”
- Step 7: Scroll to the bottom of the results find TEAS at PSI section. Click “Select”
- Step 8: Choose the exam type – either “TEAS for Nursing Students”
- Step 9: Follow the prompts to pay for your TEAS exam. You will need to either sign in with an existing ATI username and password or create an account during this checkout process. You will receive a confirmation of payment from ATI where you can immediately schedule your TEAS at PSI exam. To schedule your exam later, you will need to log into the ATI student portal and navigate to your Recent Activity or the TEST tab. There you can click on the Schedule Now or Manage Exam link and follow the prompts to schedule your exam.Starting November 19, 2021, PSI will be offering online remote testing options.You will have the choice to take your exam at PSI either as a remote exam that can be taken at home or at an actual PSI testing center. Requirements for licensure
According to Louisiana law governing the practice of nursing, a nursing graduate must complete the approved educational program preparing for licensure as a registered nurse, be approved to test, and must pass the NCLEX-RN exam to be licensed as a registered nurse.
Clinical requirements
Clinical agency affiliation requirements include documentation of the following for clinical nursing students prior to beginning any clinical nursing course: annual criminal background check and drug screen, immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, negative TB test, current season flu vaccine, tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis and hepatitis B series vaccines, professional liability insurance, health insurance, and AHA Healthcare Provider BLS.
